The European Action of the World March of Women has begun

Today, June 29th 2010, approximately 500 women from Europe received the Balkan's feminist caravan in Gezi Park, downtown Istanbul, Turkey.

Turkish, Kurdish, Cyprian, Greek, Albanian, Macedonian and Romanian women joined women from Galicia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Basque country, Poland, Great Britain and Belgium to denounce the consequences of the crisis, their false solutions and the hypocrisy of governments that reduce social spending, having donated millions to banks and maintained a high level of military expenses.
From Gezi Park, women marched to the port where a boat left for a tour of the Maiden island which is the meeting point between Asia and Europe. On this island, a tower has been built by a king who, according to a legend, imprisoned his daughter there to isolate and protect her from danger. Thus, the WMW symbolically denounced patriarchal discourses and practices that confine women to "protect" them.
